A few thoughts on today:
1) I actually went all day without checking my email. When is the last time you did that? Truth is, in today's day and age, even email is becoming obsolete! The days of chain mail and funny forwarded jokes have been made history by Mr. Zuckerberg.
2) While I was at the AT&T store on Wednesday, I didn't move my contacts over to my new phone, Flip. So I've been slowly chipping away at moving all those over. What a horribly tedious task. If you're reading this, text me your name please. It will greatly speed up my process.
3) People have been asking if I've been having withdrawals. No, I really haven't. There have been times it's crossed my mind, like "now's when I'd whip out the ol' trusty iPhone," but I've been carrying around a pocket New Testament and that's much better. Plus it's only been a few days, give me some time to go insane already :) If you see me around, it neither hurts nor helps to bring up my phone. It's kind of like asking someone who just quit smoking "so, how's the quitting smoking going?"
4) What I didn't expect is the number of people who have told me that they have either considered something like this or that they think their spouse or loved one needs it.
5) off topic: I went shopping with my kids today. I carried Emerick, who was asleep in his carseat and Kellanne walked right beside me. You wouldn't believe how many people observed to me that "Well, it looks like you've got your hands full." I could be wrong, but I don't think this would happen if I was a woman. I really think I was a victim of a double standard here. Every time it happened, I just smiled and said "Yep, we're having fun shopping today," I mean.. would it sound crazy to you to say that I wanted to take my kids Christmas shopping? (Did I look that frazzled that people needed to make that comment?)
6) Thought it might make sense to spell out what the current state of technology is in our home. You may or may not know that we don't have a TV. Haven't had one for almost four years. We do, however, have an iMac, two iPads (both purchased by our employers) and Heidi has an iPhone 4S. And we're probably going to get a television in the next 6 months or so. The thing I've noticed through the years is that while Heidi and I were intentional about not having a TV, that inadvertently caused many nights where we both sat in the same room on our separate devices; something much less interactive than watching a show together.
So.. I'm not going completely overboard and anti-everything. I'm probably not even going to sell my iPhone. Or maybe I will, but first I am going to evaluate whether we can use it in the house, maybe get one of those jukebox things that I can put it in, or something.. It is silly to think that we won't ever have any technologies, or that our kids won't. But I want to be clear that this journey is not about going gung-ho against all technology. It is about re-evaluating my family's priorities and how we plan to govern the use of technology in our household.
7) is a challenge for you. This week, be observant of those around you at work and out-and-about (getting gas, Christmas shopping, etc) and their cell phone usage. Try to gauge the impact it has on their social interactions in their setting.
